RE: hydraulic slide leaks

The Winnebago Class A that we just traded in for our fifthwheel was a hydraulic moneypit. On our way back from Alaska last year, we developed a leak in the bedroom slide area, fluid flowing out of the basement A/C, covering our toad. Bedroom slide would creep out, we had to stop every 30 miles or so to run it back in. Limped into Prince George, BC, where we moved into a motel for seventeen (17) days while repairs were made (parts shipped over night express from HWD to the border, where they then sat for several days. Long story short, we paid $3500 for the repairs, and got reimbursed $900 by HWH (there was a recall on the hoses, which we were not notified of). PLUS the cost of the motel. The day we traded it in we discovered a leak in the living room slide hoses, cost us $4000 in trade in value. No more hydraulics for us! And no more Winnebago products either!!!

RE: Newbie workamping questions

We have volunteered for CA and WA state parks, neither of which had a fixed number of hours. We typically gave them four six hour days, just 'cuz we like to stay bush. Full hookups, no pay. We did one private place, worked four eight hour days on, three off, three on, four off, for hookups and money, which totaled out to a whopping $7 an hour. They hired high school kids for $12 an hour, and adults for $14. Big mistake on our part. We are currently volunteering for a National Wildlife Refuge, they require 24 hours a week each. Which matchs our 4x6 perfectly. Perqs, full hookups, free laundry, and ice maker...

RE: Air travel to Yellowstone area?

Another thing to consider is the weather. We were in that area a month or so ago, there were several times that the road from West Yellowstone was closed into the park, and once or twice the road from Jackson in was closed. Check the weather...

RE: Parking in Quartzsite

We were in Q a week ago, Main St (frontage road on the north side of the Interstate) is still a construction zone, and a mess. All in all, the place was pretty deserted, parking was not a problem. No telling what it will be like in Jan, altho we heard a lot of "locals" saying that visitation was way down so far for the season...

RE: A portable/counter top ice maker in your unit?

We just went from a Class A to a fifthwheel (Open Road 35 ft), it has a compartment inside designed for a washer/dryer. We put an apartment sized freezer in it instead, and put our little ice maker (from Compact Appliance) on top of the freezer. All works well, the ice maker makes ice, when the basket is full we dump it into either the freezer (but that is usually full of meat from a Costco run), or a small ice chest for use. Works for us...

RE: Reveiver hitch...

"...bolt it onto your rear bumper..."
No rear bumper on our Open Road, so that is out. We haven't done the deed yet, waiting for the new year. I did e-mail both Reese (no response), and hitchesonline. They said that they do now make a hitch for fifthwheels (no surpise there), and do not recommend one. Since all we want to to is add either a bike rack or a cargo shelf, we are not paying any attention to their not recommending.
Will let you know when we do it...

We are brand new to the fifthwheel thing, moved there from a Class A. We have a 2007 GMC2500HD, Reese 18K, and had airbags installed at Camping world. All is well...

RE: Good route from Yuma to Bakersfield

"...that secondary road that goes through Lake Hughes then to I 5?..."
That "secondary" road is CA Hwy 138. Not a bad two laned hwy, unless it is snowing, then it can be really nasty. I know of a CHP officer who spent about 12 hours stuck in his patrol car one time...

Reveiver hitch...

We want to install a receiver hitch on the rear of our Open Road 35ft. I have done some googling, but I can't find a source for do-it-yourself hitches. We are volunteering at a national wildlife refuge for the next four months, so taking it somewhere for an installation is not an option right now...

RE: Another air compressor question

I have a Tsunami Master flow MF-1050, and am thinking of adding a small tank to increase volume, so that I can run some airtools if I want. Has anyone done this, and if so, how did it work???

RE: Heavily oxidized front cap, how to make shine again?

Try plain old waterless paste hand cleaner, available at any auto part store, or the automotive section at Wallyworld. Minimum elbow grease, no residue, the fiberglas (or metal) will shine like new in no time at all...

Many thanks. Re the GPS, we have one, but it is a Magellan Meridian, and doesn't show the lanes unless you go to such a small scale that you have zip advanced warning. May have to invest in one of the new James Bond types one of these days...

RE: Big Buddy heater problems

Yup, the inline filter is required. I didn't believe that, and ruined our Big Buddy. I got two regular Buddy heaters from the company, factory rebuilds, for about $35 each, AND an inline filter to used if I have to used a refillable tank again...
